897 was the national standard for altimeter calibration. It was calibrated so that the instrument errors were known throughout the flight envelope. The aircraft to be calibrated would fly alongside. Paint scheme devised by rod dawes, performance engineer & test observer on 897, to be seen easily at altitude from below (against a nearly-black sky) and from above (usually against white cloud).
