Bristow's Coastguard Helicopter East London
There was a very unusual sight over the East London on the evening of 1.6.2017. A Coastguard rescue helicopter flew over Wanstead Flats and landed near Whipps Cross Road. Whipps Cross hospital has one of the very few hyperbaric units (decompression chanbers) in the south of England. So very occasionally the SAR helicopters fly patients in. These are often divers who have got into trouble with “the bends”, or excess nitrogen in their blood which forms bubbles that can be fatal. Time is critical so there is a well rehearsed procedure to land near the Hollow Ponds. And then an ambulance from Whipps transfers them. In 2014 I saw a yellow RAF Sea King SAR helicopter do the same thing. Police and Epping Forest keepers are called to keep crowds clear of the landing site.
Here it was waiting for clearance to take off back to base.
