Mitsubishi

Before 1946 originated in a giant shipbuilding and engineering company which in 1920 formed the Misubishi Nainenki Seizo KK at Kobe, producing engines and aircraft. An early designer was Herbert Smith, who had previously worked for the Sopwith company in the UK. The company produced a very wide range of bombers, seaplanes and fighters, most notably the A6M Zero-Sen fighter during WW2. The company had been reorganized in 1928, and the aircraft division was formed into the separate Misubishi Kokuki KK company. In 1934 this was absorbed into the much larger Heavy Industries division, Mitsubishi Jukogyo KK. The centre of aircraft production was always Nagoya, but by 1944 Mitsubishi had 6 airframe and 11 engine factories throughout Japan. It had built over 18,000 aircraft since 1921, almost all for the military and the navy.
After 1952 Shin Mitsubishi Jukogyo KK formed the integrated Komaki Aircraft Works. At first this overhauled USAF aircraft such as the C-46, B-26 and later F-86 Sabre. It the built the S-55 helicopter followed by other helicopters and eventually Phantom jet fighters. The MU-2 own design twin turboprop first flew in 1963, and there followed other indigenous aircraft. The name Shin was dropped from the title in 1963. Mitsubishi is now a subcontractor for the 767, 777 and MD-11 commercial aircraft.
