Originally formed in Hawthorne, California in 1939 by John Knudsen (Jack) Northrop, Northrop Aircraft Inc. became a major United States aircraft manufacturer which merged with Grumman in 1994 to form Northrop Grumman. The company's first aircraft was the N-3PB patrol bomber for the Norwegian Air Force. While subcontracting during WW2 for other aircraft companies, Northrop developed the P-61 Black Widow night fighter, which first flew in 1942 but did not enter combat until 2 years later. The most striking Northrop product was the XB-35 Flying Wing, which appeared in 1946 and led to the jet-powered YB-49. The 1959 F-5 light fighter was built in 5 other countries. The YF-17 of 1974 led to the F/A-18 Hornet which was produced jointly with McDonnell Douglas. They also jointly developed the YF-23 Advanced Tactical Fighter, which appeared in 1990. In 1989 the B-2 stealth bomber flew, a descendent of Jack Northrop's flying wing design.
