Grade

Hans Grade was an engineer and a German aviation pioneer. On 28 October 1908 he successfully made the first powered flight over German soil in an aircraft of his own design at Magdeburg. A year later he won the 40.000 Reichsmark "Lanz-Preis der Lufte", as he was the first German to fly a flat "figure of 8" in a German aircraft with a German engine around two pylons, 1000 metres apart. The small aircraft company he founded with this money did not survive the Versailles Treaty of 1918. Hans Grade died in 1946 at the age of 67.
