Piper

In 1930 the Taylor Aircraft Company company filed for bankruptcy and William T. Piper purchased the assets and in 1935 bought out C. G. Taylor, who left the company and went on to form the Taylorcraft Aircraft Company. The company that had been taken over by Piper relocated to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, and in 1937, it was renamed Piper Aircraft Corporation. The J-3 Cub was built in increasing quantities, ending in 1946 with 14,125 and 5,703 military versions. Many other light aircraft followed, in numerous versions, many with the names of American Indian tribes. Since Lock Haven flooded frequently, eventually a new site was found at Vero Beach, Florida, where the Cherokee was designed and built. Bill Piper Senior died in 1970 and there were many financial complications. The manufacture of light aircraft in the USA was impacted in the mid-1980s when increasing insurance premiums made operation financially difficult for Piper Aircraft and other American sellers of light aircraft. Production of the larger commuter aircraft continued through this period, and in the end limitation of liability was provided by new legislation in the early '90s. Also, the firm was re-branded The New Piper Aircraft at that time. In July 2003, American Capital Strategies, Ltd. bought 94% of Piper's voting equity. In 2006 the firm dropped the "New" from its name, reverting to Piper Aircraft. Also in that year, a partnership with Honda was announced to market the new HondaJet. In 2009 American Capital Strategies sold the company to Singapore-based investment strategy company Imprimis. In 2010 the company announced that Boeing subsidiary Aviall would act as Piper's sole global parts distributor.
