Piaggio

Rinaldo Piaggio was an industrialist and politician who began producing parts for Caproni bombers at his Genova Sestri factory. By mid-1916 production of complete Capronis was in progress, adding FBA and Macchi flying boats at Finale Ligure in 1917-18. The company closed down briefly in 1918, but restarted in 1923 by taking over Pegna & Bonmartini and reopening a factory at Sestri Ponente. Early designs were mainly prototypes, but from 1933 designer Giovanni Pegna concentrated on multi-engine bombers. Senator Rinaldo Piaggio died in 1938, but his two sons Enrico and Armando carried on. This second Piaggio company closed down in 1943.
Piaggio & Co., Societa per Azioni (Piaggio Aero) was formed in 1946 and began by turning C-47s into civil airliners. A new amphibian, the P.136L flew in 1948 and went into production. The P.148 and 149 trainers won major orders from many air forces. By 1957 Piaggio created the Piaggio P.166 light transport aircraft, followed in 1960 by licensing of the Rolls Royce Viper and from then on manufacturing jet engines. The company was restructured in 1964 as Industrie Aeronautiche E Meccaniche Rinaldo Piaggio SpA, with the P.166 as the main product, after which came the Avanti corporate transport, in collaboration with Gates Learjet, which later withdrew. By 1998, the assets of Rinaldo Piaggio S.p.A. exchanged hands and a group of entrepreneurs headed by the Di Mase and Ferrari families and Piaggio became Piaggio Aero Industries. This acquiring of assets brought Piaggio Aero Industries back to its roots, as a designer and producer of business aircraft.
