Nord-Aviation

Nord-Aviation was originally SNCAN (Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Nord), a state-owned French aircraft manufacturer, formed in 1937 when the French defence industries were forcibly nationalised. On the company's formation, it also took over CAMS, most of Potez, Les Mureaux and parts of Breguet and Amiot. It continued the constituent companies' existing aircraft production programmes, and in WW2 produced the Potez 63, Potez-CAMS 161, Do 24, Bf 108 and prototypes of the Me 208. The Do 24 continued to be produced after WW2, the Bf 108 was developed into the Nord 1000 and a family of light aircraft began. Caudron-Renault was added in 1945. In 1954 came the acquisition of SFECMAS (Société Française d'Étude et de Construction de Matériels Aéronautiques Spéciaux). The 1950s saw the NC.856 military liaison and 4-seat tourer, the 1402 Gerfaut and 1500 Griffin supersonic research aircraft and the 2501 Noratlas military freighter, among others. The name was changed to Nord-Aviation in 1958. In 1970, Nord Aviation merged with Sud Aviation to create Société Nationale d'Industrie Aérospatiale (SNIAS), later renamed Aérospatiale and ultimately merged into the European aerospace corporation EADS in 2000.
